Description

Gary Player is recognized and respected as a champion golfer all over the world. One of only a few to have won all four majors, he is legendary for being one of the toughest of competitors with an enormous will to win and the coolest of heads under pressure.Bunker shots are Gary Player's favorite shots in golf, and in this book he clearly outlines the secrets of his success from the sand.He is rated by most of his fellow professionals as the best bunker player in the history of the game. Time after time, in the final rounds of a championship, he has splashed out of sand from a difficult lie to end up with a tap-in putt. He believes firmly that his ability to play the bunkers has been the most significant aspect of his game in every one of his sixteen major championship victories on the regular and senior tours.Player details the basic fundamentals of good bunker play, from "reading the sand" to the set-up and the slow, wristy swing. He discusses which type of sand wedge to use under different conditions and what the various types of bunkers are that can either help or hinder the average golfer. Player also shows you how to practice your shots when you're away from the course to help you improve your game.Accompanied by 150 color photographs that beautifully illustrate Player's techniques, Bunker Play is the complete guide to mastering the high, short, or low shots that skip and bite; shots from uphill, downhill, or buried lies; or long, accurate fades from fairway bunkers. After some practice, you should not only plan on getting out of the sand every time and putting the ball safely on the green, but you will aim, as he does, to hole out every greenside bunker shot you play.

157 pages of in-depth knowledge about the art of playing the bunker shot, both greenside and also from the fairway bunkers, from Gary Player, acknowledged as one of the best bunker players the game of golf has seen. What is extremely useful to me is the detailed knowledge Gary and his ghost writer, Mike Wade, have provided in terms of so many important subtleties and variations in playing a successful bunker shot. Gary of course discusses the basic bunker shot. But true to Player's typical insightful personality, this book includes multiple multiple insights that I would never have thought of, until he rightfully points them out. This includes: the pre-shot routine and mindset that every golfer should have approaching the shot. The history of the bunker and the different types of roles that bunkers play in your course management. Playing sand shots with at least all three of your wedges. Playing the long explosion bunker shots with your 9 iron (or even lower). The four different types of sand and the way they respond differently, and how you as a player treat them differently. The essential nature of bunker play to being a true champion - all championships are going to have pins stuck close to bunkers - all championships are won by going at the hole when appropriate, not playing away from it all the time. Six major different types of greenside bunker shots: the 5-yard shot, the high shot without spin, the low spinning shot, the low running shot, the 45-yard shot, the shot with the putter from the bunker (yes, there is even a science to that). How hard to swing (and how that varies across the four different types of sand and the 6 different types of greenside bunker shots. Uphill lies, under the bunker lip, the downhill lie, ball above the feet, ball below the feet, plugged lies, ball above the feet uphill, ball below the feet requiring you to hit from your knees. Wet sand, hard sand, fluffy sand. Whew. Gary Player is right.... you really should know (and to the extent you can, practice) from each one of these conditions, if you are going to successfully defend par in a championship..... or as he says, practice to the point that you are trying to hole out from the bunker because you know you can. Oh, and then, he goes on to discuss analogous knowledge about the fairway bunker shot. And finally, how you should practice. How you can practice at home when you (as most of us are) time-challenged. Finally, tons of full color photos. In summary: you still will need YouTube videos at a minimum to see all of this in action (there's many Gary Player instructional sand shot YouTubes - I highly recommend finding and watching and learning from those). This book then gives you the bunker shot reference manual to describe all the other things that Gary is talking about in his videos, that he can't describe in a 5 to 7 minute video clip. This 1996 classic book is well worth it to me. It gives me in-depth reference knowledge that I would never have known if he didn't write it all down for us. Finally, Gary points out that practice, practice, and desire to practice the bunker shot is required - you can't learn the bunker shot without enough practice to get the feel of this. But once you have the right fundamentals and you are now embarking on practicing bunker shots efficiently and seriously, Gary has given us the reference points of "what to practice" and "the knowledge you need to know" in a level of depth that to me is frankly superb. IMHO this book is well well worth the modest price that is charged for used editions of this 1996 book. I have found my continually slowly but steadily improving sand game is due to Gary Player.
